|Have you ever thought of being a Parliamentary candidate for the Green Party?
Oxfordshire Green Party is starting the process for selecting candidates for the next General Election. This is due to be held in 2022 – but it could be a lot sooner! As you will doubtless be aware, these are tumultuous times in British politics. While the likelihood of a sudden General Election has receded at least for the time being, we could still have one at short notice and so as a party we need to be ready if one is called.
Parliamentary candidates come from all walks of life – some have lots of political experience, while others have very little. But all have a desire to try and use their position to promote Green policies and principles.
There are six Parliamentary constituencies in Oxfordshire – Banbury, Henley, Oxford East, Oxford West and Abingdon, Wantage, and Witney – and we want to get candidates selected for each one as soon as possible so that we are ready whenever an election is called. Our guide for general election candidates explains a bit more about what it involves.
We need applications and nominations for parliamentary candidates by 23:59 on Friday 1 February 2019. There will then be hustings for candidates in February, alongside a ballot of Green Party members in each constituency.
You can also nominate someone for selection as Green Party candidate for your Witney constituency. Just email their name and contact details to firstname.lastname@example.org. We need at least 2 nominations for each applicant.
If being a General Election candidate is too much, but you would still like to help the party by being a candidate in local elections, then please let us know. In 2019 there are elections on 2 May for South Oxfordshire, Vale of the White Horse, Cherwell and West Oxfordshire district councils, and we need more candidates in all these areas. We try to make it possible for people to vote Green wherever they live, so we need Green Party candidates on the ballot paper. You can stand anywhere in West Oxfordshire District Council, not just in Witney North. To do this needs just 10 signatures from local voters, which we can help you get.
